A message from Vets Town Hall founder, Sebastian Junger

Today’s veterans often find that, although they’re willing to die for their country, they’re not sure how to live for it. It’s hard to know how to live for a country that regularly tears itself apart along every possible political and demographic boundary. It’s complete madness, and veterans know this.

To support our veterans – and to be able to function as a democracy – we need both cohesive communities and respect for all our fellow Americans. No matter what you look like, how you voted or what church you attend – or none at all – you are a citizen of this great nation. The U.S. military is strong precisely because it turns a blind eye to all of these petty distinctions. It’s time for our country to, once again, learn from those who have served.

Vets Town Halls are a rare opportunity to bring neighbors together to serve a common goal: showing up for our veterans. Veterans of any war who served in any capacity are invited to speak for ten minutes to tell their community why they enlisted, what they experienced, and how it affected them. Unlike with most public gatherings, political messaging is completely forbidden in this sacred process. In the room, we are all equal and we are all Americans. Full stop.

Are you worried about a friend or relative who served? Are you worried about dangerous new political divisions in this great country? Many people are, and the two problems are deeply intertwined. But there is something you can do about it.

Whether you’re a veteran or a civilian, you can serve your country by organizing or simply attending a Vets Town Hall. We have resources available to help. Start with our basic guide to setting up an event, then let us know you’re organizing an event, or ask us a question.

Thank you,
